WebIn the Voices of Freedom section of Chapter Sixteen, there are two speeches: one by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians, the other by labor leader Ira Steward. In the previous chapter we examined how former slaves were getting their first taste of freedom, albeit an extremely limited version. WebIn reading of this chapter and both documents, it really shows how the United States had to fight for its democracy and freedoms. There were two main points during this time that helped shape America. Eugene V. Debs was a man on a mission; he was arrested for delivering an anti-war speech and was convicted in violation in the Espionage Act.
